1980's and 1990's

The 80's and 90's saw us increase pig slaughter 10 fold and a reduction in beef and lamb.

We developed the boning and packing of both fresh and frozen meat of various species.

During the 80's, Ruskington benefitted from major capital investment as we developed our Lincolnshire sausage and pork pie business.

The Spalding Factory

Spalding production was situated in The Crescent until we built a factory in Fulney Lane in 1989. Manufacturing needed streamlining and a much higher production capacity to cope with current and future demand.

The Frampton site had a range of operations including meat packing and beef boning. It had the only large blast freeze and so it also froze and stored meat for the abattoir until it took over the cooked meats business which was then at Ruskington. Eventually this was to become the M & S business that we have today.

The remainder of the shops were eventually shut, apart from The Crescent shop which still thrives in Spalding.

The Geo Adams Heritage Shop

We tried to develop the Geo Adams brand through the Lincolnshire sausage and our TV campaign managed to raise consumer awareness and sales. The catchy jingle is still remembered by some consumers even today, years after the campaign stopped.

Also at this time we enjoyed good growth as an own label manufacturer. The development of major retailer accounts occured mainly in the 1980's and 1990's.

We continued to win new business not just by being the cheapest but by continuous investment in people and manufacturing processes and going forward all the time in an honest and forthright way. A philosophy that has stayed with us to this day.

The Meat Plant operation also continued to change. Notably, the advent of consumer packing took us further down the steps towards being a 'processor'.

Our export business was strong with over 20% of our tonnage going abroad. This gave us alternative markets and the ability to invest to go forward.
